Today more than ever the U.S. health care system is strained. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 50.7 million Americans do not have health care insurance and are ineligible for Medicare or Medicaid. The recession, compounded by an aging population and a growth in chronic illnesses such as diabetes, means that clinics are needed more than ever. The new healthcare reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), is expected to reduce the number of non-elderly uninsured adults, however plenty of uninsured individuals will remain, as many as 23 million in 2019.
